Is Evaporation Just Slow Boiling?
At first glance, it is easy to assume that evaporation is simply boiling happening at a leisurely pace. After all, both processes turn a liquid into a gas, but underneath the surface, they behave very differently.
Evaporation is a quiet, surface-level event. It happens at any temperature when molecules at the very top of a liquid gain enough energy to break free into the air. Because it relies on the fastest-moving molecules leaving the liquid behind, it actually leaves the remaining liquid cooler—which is why your sweat cools you down as it dries.
Boiling, on the other hand, is much more energetic. It requires reaching a specific temperature known as the boiling point. When this happens, vaporization doesn't just happen at the top; it occurs throughout the entire liquid. This intense internal energy creates pockets of vapor that rise up as bubbles. Unlike evaporation, boiling does not cause the liquid to cool down while it happens.
So, while both processes share the same destination—turning liquid into vapor—they take very different roads to get there.
