Where Does Eye Color Come From—Mother or Father?
It’s a question many parents wonder, especially when a newborn opens their eyes for the first time: Is eye color passed down from the mother, the father, or both? The answer isn’t as simple as choosing one parent over the other—because in reality, you inherit eye color from both.
Eye color is a genetic trait, meaning it’s determined by the genes you receive at birth. You get one copy of the gene from your mother and another from your father. These genes interact in complex ways to create what we actually see—the color of the eyes, known as the phenotype. While early science believed a single gene controlled eye color, we now know it’s influenced by multiple genes, making predictions less straightforward.
For example, brown eyes are typically dominant over blue or green, so a child with one brown-eyed parent and one blue-eyed parent is more likely to have brown eyes. But it’s not guaranteed. Two blue-eyed parents can have a brown-eyed child if the right combination of recessive genes is passed down. Even eye colors like hazel or gray result from subtle variations in how these genes express themselves.
Interestingly, babies often have lighter eyes at birth because melanin, the pigment responsible for color, increases with age and sun exposure. That’s why many infants’ eyes darken in the first months of life.
So, while both parents contribute equally to a child’s eye color, the final outcome is a unique blend of their combined genetic influence. It’s not about one parent “winning” the genetic lottery—it’s about how their traits merge in unexpected, beautiful ways. Nature’s recipe is rarely predictable, and eye color is no exception.
