How Often Should You Really Wash Your Bath Towel?

Let’s be honest—most of us have reused a bath towel a few times to save laundry. But is it really okay to keep using the same towel for a week? The short answer: yes, but with caveats.

As a general rule, experts recommend washing or replacing your bath towel at least once a week. Why? Damp towels are a breeding ground for bacteria and mildew. Your skin sheds dead cells and natural oils every day, and when you towel off, those residues transfer onto the fabric. Combined with lingering moisture, that creates a cozy environment for microbes.

Hand towels need even more attention.

Used multiple times a day, often by different people, they pick up germs quickly. Swap them out every couple of days to keep things hygienic—especially in shared bathrooms.

And what about washcloths? Those take the biggest hit. Scrubbing your face or body means more direct contact with oils, sweat, and bacteria. Dermatologists suggest replacing them every other day, or even daily if you have acne-prone skin.

The bottom line? If you’re bathing daily, reusing a towel once or twice is generally fine—*if* it’s fully dried between uses and doesn’t have a musty smell. But anything beyond three to four uses without washing starts pushing the limits of cleanliness.

Simple habits make a difference: hang your towel in a well-ventilated area, avoid cramming it into a damp pile, and stick to a weekly laundry rhythm. Your skin—and nose—will thank you.
