Is Fake Leather Safe to Wear?

Many people turn to fake leather as a more ethical or affordable alternative to real leather. While it’s often marketed as a safer or more sustainable choice, not all faux leather is created equal. One of the most common types, polyurethane (PU) leather, can come with hidden health risks you might not expect.

PU leather may release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are chemicals that can off-gas and affect indoor air quality. But that's not the only concern—some products have been found to contain heavy metals like lead and cadmium. These substances aren’t just environmental pollutants; they’re toxic to humans and animals even in small amounts.

Long-term exposure to high levels of lead or cadmium can lead to serious health issues, including neurological damage, kidney problems, and even cancer. The risk is greater when these materials are used in furniture, clothing, or accessories that are in close, prolonged contact with the skin. While regulations in some countries limit these substances, not all products on the market comply, especially those from less-regulated supply chains.

That doesn’t mean all fake leather is off-limits. Awareness is key. Look for certifications that confirm low VOC emissions and the absence of harmful heavy metals. Some newer materials—like bio-based leathers made from mushrooms, pineapple fibers, or recycled content—are emerging as safer, more sustainable options.

Ultimately, choosing what to wear or bring into your home should be about more than style—it’s about health, ethics, and long-term impact. So before buying that faux leather jacket or sofa, take a moment to check what it’s really made of. Your body—and the planet—might thank you for it.
