While the average human lifespan hovers around 70 to 80 years, scientists are uncovering clues that could one day extend our years dramatically—perhaps even to two centuries.
The secret? It might be hiding in the ocean’s most majestic creatures: whales.Whales, particularly species like the bowhead whale, can live well over 200 years, making them some of the longest-living mammals on Earth. Scientists are now studying the genetic makeup of these marine giants to understand how they resist age-related diseases like cancer and maintain cellular health far longer than humans.
In recent research, the Rochester team focused on the DNA repair mechanisms found in long-lived species. They discovered specific genetic traits that enhance cell stability and slow down aging processes. These same mechanisms, if replicated or activated in humans, could theoretically delay aging and extend lifespan.
“We’re not saying people will live to 200 next year,” says one of the lead researchers, “but we’re learning which biological pathways protect against aging—and that opens the door to potential therapies.”
