Can Garlic Capsules Help Lower Cholesterol?
For years, garlic has been celebrated not just as a kitchen staple, but as a potential ally for heart health. Recent research from 2016 suggests there might be some truth to that. The study found that taking garlic supplements consistently for over two months could reduce LDL cholesterol—often called "bad" cholesterol—by as much as 10%. This effect was most noticeable in individuals who started with slightly elevated cholesterol levels.
That’s a modest but meaningful drop, especially for those looking to manage their heart health without immediately resorting to medication. While garlic capsules aren’t a miracle cure, they may offer a natural complement to lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.
However, it's important to keep expectations in check. The same research shows that garlic doesn't appear to significantly affect triglyceride levels, another important marker for cardiovascular risk. So while it may help with one piece of the puzzle, it won’t address all aspects of heart health on its own.
Also worth noting: results take time. Benefits were seen only after sustained use—meaning popping a capsule here and there won’t cut it. Consistency over at least eight weeks seems key.
As with any supplement, it’s wise to talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you're on blood thinners or other medications, since garlic can interact with them. While garlic capsules aren’t a one-stop solution, they could be a helpful addition for some—just don’t expect dramatic results overnight.
