Can Leather Withstand Rain?
It’s a common question: can you wear leather in the rain? The short answer is yes, but with caution. While leather has a natural resistance to small amounts of moisture—like a quick sprinkle—getting caught in a downpour is a different story.
Leather is made from animal hide, which means it’s a porous material. When wet, it absorbs water much like your skin might soak up a lotion. A little dampness isn’t the end of the world; wipe it off gently with a dry cloth and let it air dry naturally. But prolonged exposure to rain can cause leather to stiffen, crack, or even warp over time.
Avoid drying leather near direct heat sources like radiators or hair dryers—this can cause shrinkage and further damage. That said, not all leather is created equal. Thicker, full-grain leathers tend to handle moisture better than softer, more delicate varieties. Some leather goods are also treated with protective finishes that boost water resistance. Still, even treated leather shouldn’t be considered fully waterproof.
If you're caught in the rain, don't panic. Just act quickly—shake off excess water, wipe it down, and let it dry slowly at room temperature. For long-term care, consider using a leather protector spray, especially on shoes and jackets that are more likely to face the elements.
Ultimately, leather and rain don’t make the best pair. It’s not about avoiding every drop, but about understanding the material’s limits. With a little care, your leather pieces can weather the occasional shower—and still look great for years to come.
