Microbial Mats vs. Biofilms: What’s the Difference?

At first glance, microbial mats and biofilms might seem like two names for the same thing—after all, both are communities of microorganisms living in close quarters, embedded in a slimy matrix. But while they share similarities, they’re not quite the same.

Biofilms are thin, often microscopic layers of microbes that stick to surfaces—like the plaque on your teeth or the slick coating on a submerged rock. They’re usually just one or a few cell layers thick, forming a relatively simple structure. These communities thrive in diverse environments, from pipes to medical implants, and are known for their resilience and resistance to treatment.

On the other hand, microbial mats are far more complex. Ranging from several millimeters up to a centimeter thick, they’re like the rainforests of the microbial world—dense, layered, and highly organized. These mats develop distinct vertical zones, each hosting different types of microbes adapted to specific conditions like oxygen levels, light, and chemical gradients. Found in places like hot springs, tidal flats, and ancient rock formations, they’ve been around for billions of years and played a key role in shaping Earth’s early atmosphere.

So while all microbial mats are technically a type of biofilm, not all biofilms rise to the complexity of a mat. The key difference lies in thickness and structure: biofilms are thin and simple; mats are thick and intricately stratified. Understanding this helps us appreciate the rich diversity of microbial life—not just what they do, but how they organize themselves in nature.
