Does O-Positive Blood Offer Protection Against COVID-19?
Since the start of the pandemic, scientists have been investigating whether blood type plays a role in susceptibility to COVID-19. Emerging research suggests that people with type O blood, including O-positive, may have a slightly lower risk of contracting the virus compared to those with other blood types.
Studies have shown that individuals with blood type O—including both O-positive and O-negative—were less likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 than those with types A, B, or AB. One possible explanation lies in natural antibodies present in certain blood types. People with type O blood have both anti-A and anti-B antibodies, which are part of the body’s innate immune defenses. These antibodies may interfere with the virus’s ability to bind to cells, potentially reducing the likelihood of infection.
Interestingly, high levels of preexisting anti-A antibodies—common in those with type O and type B blood—have been linked to reduced risk, as have anti-B antibodies in people with type O and type A. This suggests that the immune machinery tied to blood type could influence how the body responds to the virus, even before exposure.
That said, while the data is compelling, it doesn’t mean people with O-positive blood are immune or highly resistant. No blood type offers complete protection. Factors like vaccination, prior infection, age, and overall health continue to play far more significant roles in determining risk and outcomes.
So, while having O-positive blood might offer a slight biological edge, the best defenses remain the same: staying up to date with vaccines, practicing good hygiene, and following public health guidance. Blood type might tilt the odds slightly, but it doesn’t change the rules of protection.
