Is Plaque a Biofilm?
Yes—dental plaque is a classic example of a biofilm. In fact, it's one of the most studied biofilms in the human body. A biofilm is essentially a structured community of microorganisms encased in a protective, slimy matrix that adheres to surfaces. In the mouth, this surface is typically your tooth enamel.
Plaque forms when bacteria in the mouth stick to teeth and begin to multiply, creating a sticky, colorless film. This isn't just random gunk—it's a highly organized microbial ecosystem. Over time, if not removed by regular brushing and flossing, this biofilm matures and becomes more complex, hosting hundreds of bacterial species that interact and thrive together.What makes plaque particularly concerning is its role in dental disease. As the biofilm grows, certain bacteria ferment sugars from food, producing acids that erode tooth enamel—leading to cavities.
