Is Polyacrylonitrile a Thermoplastic?

Polyacrylonitrile, commonly known as PAN, is a synthetic polymer that falls into the thermoplastic category. In practical applications—especially when used as a membrane substrate in filtration technologies—it is valued for offering a higher degree of hydrophilicity compared to alternatives like polysulfone (PSf) or polyethersulfone (PES).

While many polymers soften or melt smoothly when heated, PAN behaves a bit uniquely. Because of its strong intermolecular nitrile groups, it typically degrades before reaching a true melt state under standard conditions. However, in polymer science and materials engineering classification, it is fundamentally recognized and categorized as a thermoplastic polymer rather than a thermoset.

This unique chemical structure gives PAN materials excellent mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and thermal stability, making them a go-to choice for advanced industrial and water-purification membrane applications.
