Understanding prostate surgery
When facing a diagnosis of prostate cancer, patients are often forced to weigh heavy medical decisions. Among the most common inquiries is whether opting to remove the prostate counts as a major medical intervention.
A radical prostatectomy is indeed a major operation. Because the procedure involves removing the prostate gland along with some surrounding tissue, it comes with a recovery period and potential side effects like changes in urinary control and sexual function.
However, major surgery is not always the immediate or inevitable answer. Medical teams frequently monitor cases closely, especially if the cancer is slow-growing and poses little immediate threat. In such scenarios, active surveillance allows patients to avoid or delay the physical toll of an operation until it becomes strictly necessary.
