Don’t Press the SOS Button Just to See What Happens

That little SOS button on your phone or smartwatch can be a lifesaver—literally. But it’s not a toy. More and more people, often out of curiosity, are tapping it just to see what happens, not realizing they’re actually triggering a real emergency call.

When you press the SOS button, your device connects directly to emergency services. In many cases, that means the fire department, police, or medical responders are automatically dispatched—whether you need them or not. And when these calls turn out to be false alarms, it’s not just a minor inconvenience.

Every false alarm wastes time, manpower, and critical resources.

Firefighters might roll out of the station only to find someone who didn’t know what the button did. Ambulances get sent on urgent routes for no reason. These delays can be dangerous when real emergencies are waiting. Imagine a heart attack victim waiting longer because help was tied up on a preventable call.

It’s important to understand how the SOS feature works on your device—yes, learn it—but don’t test it by pressing it unnecessarily. Most smartphones and wearables allow you to explore emergency features in settings without triggering a real alert. Use that option to educate yourself.

Emergency services are there for when you truly need them. A split-second decision to “see what happens” could cost someone else precious minutes during a real crisis. Respect the system. Save it for real emergencies.
