How to Tell If Someone Is Tracking Your Phone

Worried that someone might be keeping tabs on your phone? You're not alone. With so much personal data tied to our devices, it’s natural to wonder if your privacy is at risk. While phones are designed with security in mind, there are ways to spot potential tracking.

One of the first red flags is unusual location activity. Have you received alerts about your phone being located somewhere you didn’t go? Or maybe you’ve noticed strange entries in your location history? These could be signs someone else is accessing your data. Also, check your device settings for unfamiliar apps that have permission to use your location. Apps you don’t recognize—or ones you didn’t install—could be cause for concern.

Another clue is an unknown device linked to your account. Whether it’s an Apple ID, Google account, or other service, regularly reviewing connected devices can help you catch something off. If you see a device you don’t own or recognize, that’s a strong indicator your phone may be monitored.

Take a few minutes to go through your app permissions. On both iOS and Android, you can easily see which apps have access to your location, camera, or microphone. Revoke access for any apps that don’t need it—and uninstall ones you don’t trust.

Trust your gut. If something feels off—like your battery draining faster than usual or strange behavior in messaging apps—it’s worth investigating. While not every oddity means you're being tracked, staying aware is your best defense. A quick check of your settings can go a long way in protecting your privacy.
