Is Viking 2 Still Working?

No, the Viking 2 mission has long been retired. Although it made significant contributions to our understanding of Mars, both the lander and orbiter have been silent for decades.

The Viking 2 lander touched down on the Red Planet in September 1976, joining its twin, Viking 1, in a bold exploration effort. It operated on the surface for an impressive 1,316 Earth days—equivalent to about 1,281 Martian sols—far exceeding its original 90-day mission plan. Scientific instruments analyzed the soil, studied the weather, and sent back panoramic images of Utopia Planitia, one of the flattest regions on Mars. But by April 12, 1980, the lander’s batteries finally failed, and NASA officially ended communications.

The orbiter component, which scouted potential landing sites and studied the planet from above, had ceased operations earlier—on July 25, 1978. During its mission, it completed 706 orbits and returned nearly 16,000 images, helping scientists map the surface and better understand Martian geology and climate.

While the hardware is no longer functional, Viking 2’s legacy lives on. Its findings laid the foundation for every Mars mission that followed, from the rovers Spirit and Opportunity to the more recent Perseverance. It was one of the first missions to search for signs of life—indirectly—by testing soil samples for biological activity. Though results were inconclusive, they sparked decades of further inquiry.

Today, Viking 2 rests as a silent relic on the Martian surface, a testament to human curiosity and the early days of interplanetary exploration. It may not be “working,” but its impact is still very much alive in every new discovery made on Mars.
