In mid-February 2026, Russia took a decisive step in its ongoing campaign to tighten control over digital communication by fully blocking access to WhatsApp. The move, confirmed by regulatory body Roskomnadzor, marks a significant escalation in the country’s efforts to enforce digital sovereignty and restrict the use of foreign-owned messaging platforms.

Until now, WhatsApp had remained accessible in Russia despite increasing scrutiny, unlike other platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, which were previously restricted.
