Is a Wet Wipe After Pooping a Good Idea?
Many people reach for wet wipes after using the bathroom, drawn to that refreshing clean feeling. But unless your healthcare provider recommends them—for example, if you have hemorrhoids or an anal fissure—experts say it’s best to skip them.
“I see so many people who have irritation and rashes around the vulva and perianal area from using wipes,” said Dr. warning against overuse. While marketed as gentle, most wipes contain fragrances, alcohol, or preservatives that disrupt the delicate skin in these areas. That “fresh butt feeling” can quickly turn into itching, redness, or even infections like contact dermatitis.
The truth is, plain old toilet paper—used correctly—is usually enough. For those who still want extra cleanliness, a bidet or plain water is a safer, more skin-friendly option. Water rinses away residue without leaving behind irritating chemicals, and it’s less likely to disturb the natural pH balance, especially important for people with vulvas.
Even unscented or “natural” wipes aren’t always harmless. The act of wiping—especially when done aggressively—can cause micro-tears or worsen existing conditions. Over time, this can lead to chronic discomfort.
If you’re prone to irritation or sensitive skin, consider switching to water-based cleaning methods. And if you do stick with wipes, choose fragrance-free, alcohol-free options and use them sparingly. Better yet, talk to your doctor if you're unsure what’s best for your body. Sometimes, less really is more—especially when it comes to your backside.
