Which Acid Can Dissolve Most Metals?

When it comes to breaking down metals, nitric acid stands out as one of the most effective and widely used chemicals. Thanks to its strong oxidizing properties, it readily dissolves a wide variety of base metals, including copper, silver, zinc, and nickel. In industrial applications and metallurgy, this process is often referred to as acid leaching, where the acid converts solid metals into soluble liquid compounds.

However, nitric acid does have clear boundaries. Noble metals such as gold and platinum are naturally resistant to pure nitric acid. This selective corrosion makes it particularly useful for metal refining and recycling, as nitric acid can easily strip away unwanted base metals or silver while leaving pure gold completely intact.

To dissolve resistant metals like gold, chemists rely on a powerful mixture known as aqua regia, which combines nitric acid with hydrochloric acid. While nitric acid acts as the primary oxidizer, hydrochloric acid provides chloride ions to stabilize the dissolved gold in solution. Together, these chemical processes showcase how different acids interact with the unique properties of various metals.
