8 Appliances You Should Always Unplug (But Probably Don’t)

Leaving appliances plugged in when not in use might seem harmless, but it can lead to energy waste, higher bills, and even safety hazards. While we often focus on the big-ticket items, it's the small ones we overlook that can quietly drain power or pose risks.

Kitchen countertop appliances like toasters, blenders, and coffee makers draw phantom energy even when idle. Unplugging them not only saves electricity but also reduces fire risk—especially since food particles and moisture can linger near heating elements.

Don’t forget hair dryers and styling tools. These high-wattage devices generate intense heat. Leaving them plugged in near water sources increases electrical danger, and cords can degrade over time, becoming fire hazards.

Small heaters are another concern. Many people leave them plugged in after use, but faulty wiring or accidental knocks can lead to overheating. Always unplug them manually after use—don’t rely solely on the switch.

Even chargers for phones, laptops, and tablets draw power when nothing’s connected. While the draw is small, it adds up over time. Unplugging chargers when not in use is a simple eco-friendly habit.

Surprisingly, power strips themselves should occasionally be unplugged. They’re meant to make life easier, but if overloaded or poorly ventilated, they can overheat. Turning them off isn’t enough—unplugging ensures complete power disconnection.

Electric kettles and candle warmers often go unnoticed. Kettles have heating elements that can malfunction, while candle warmers can overheat wax containers if left on for too long. Both should be unplugged immediately after use.

Finally, old electronics like TVs, game consoles, and sound systems continue to sip power in standby mode. A full shutdown and occasional unplugging keeps them safer and more efficient.

Unplugging may seem like a hassle, but it’s a small step with real benefits—lower energy bills, extended appliance life, and peace of mind.
