Four Warning Signs Your Liver May Be in Trouble

Many people don’t realize how much the liver does—filtering toxins, processing nutrients, and helping with blood clotting, just to name a few. When this vital organ is damaged, it often sends distress signals, though they can be easy to overlook.

Jaundice is one of the most telling signs. It causes a yellow tint in the eyes and skin, though on Black or brown skin, it might be trickier to spot—check the whites of the eyes or the inside of the lips. It happens when the liver can’t properly process bilirubin, a waste product.

Another red flag is abdominal pain and swelling. If you feel persistent discomfort in the upper right side of your belly, or notice bloating that doesn’t go away, it could signal liver inflammation or fluid buildup. This swelling can extend beyond the belly—swelling in the legs and ankles (edema) often points to liver dysfunction, especially when combined with other symptoms.

Itchy skin, though less talked about, can be a clue. When the liver struggles to filter toxins, substances like bile salts can build up under the skin, causing maddening itching without a rash. Dark urine, pale stools, constant fatigue, and nausea are also common but often mistaken for other issues.

These signs don’t always mean severe liver disease—but if they persist, seeing a healthcare provider makes sense. The liver can regenerate, but only if given the chance. Catching problems early—through awareness and testing—can make all the difference.
