What Are We Really Made Of?

It’s easy to think of the human body as something complex and mysterious — and it is — but at the most basic level, we’re all just stardust arranged in a very particular way. Over 99% of your body’s mass comes from just six elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. These are the building blocks that make life possible.

Oxygen is by far the heaviest contributor, making up roughly 65% of your body weight. It’s not just in your breath — it’s woven into the water and organic molecules that keep you alive. Carbon, the element of life, forms the backbone of DNA, proteins, and fats. Hydrogen, the lightest and most abundant element in the universe, pairs with oxygen to make water — the very essence of life. Nitrogen is crucial for amino acids and nucleic acids, while calcium gives your bones and teeth their strength. Phosphorus plays a key role in energy transfer and the structure of DNA.

Then there’s the “trace crew” — potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine, and magnesium — making up about 0.85% of your mass. Don’t let their small share fool you. These elements are vital. Sodium and potassium help your nerves fire. Magnesium supports hundreds of enzymes. Sulfur is found in proteins, and chlorine helps balance your body’s fluids.

In the end, we’re not so different from the Earth and stars — just a precise mixture of common elements, doing extraordinary things. You’re mostly oxygen and carbon, yes, but it’s the way these pieces come together that makes you, well, you.
