The 4 Stages of Cognitive Development According to Piaget

Long before modern neuroscience took center stage, psychologist Jean Piaget laid the groundwork for understanding how children’s thinking evolves. His theory of cognitive development remains influential, outlining four key stages through which children pass as they develop the ability to reason, learn, and understand the world.

The first stage, the sensorimotor stage, spans from birth to around age two. During this time, infants learn through sensory experiences and motor actions—grasping, sucking, and looking. A major milestone here is the development of object permanence: the understanding that things continue to exist even when out of sight.

Next comes the preoperational stage, lasting from about age two to seven. Kids in this phase begin to use language and symbols, like pretending a stick is a sword, but they’re still largely egocentric—struggling to see things from others’ perspectives. Their thinking is intuitive, not logical.

Between ages seven and eleven, children enter the concrete operational stage. This is when logical thinking kicks in—especially around tangible, concrete concepts. They start grasping ideas like conservation (knowing that pouring water into a different-shaped glass doesn’t change the amount) and can classify objects by size, shape, or function.

Finally, from around age twelve onward, adolescents reach the formal operational stage. This is where abstract reasoning develops. Teens begin to think about hypothetical situations, ponder moral dilemmas, and systematically solve complex problems—skills that lay the foundation for adult thought.

Piaget’s stages aren’t just academic milestones—they’re windows into how young minds grow. While later research has refined some of his ideas, his framework still helps educators and parents understand the evolving way children make sense of their world.
