The Four Steps of the Water Cycle
Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection—these are the four essential steps that keep Earth’s water moving in a continuous, natural cycle.
It all begins with evaporation. When the sun heats up water from oceans, lakes, and rivers, it turns into vapor and rises into the air. This invisible gas floats upward, carried by warm air currents. Without the sun’s energy, this whole process would come to a halt.
As the water vapor climbs higher into the cooler atmosphere, it undergoes condensation. The cooling air causes the vapor to change back into tiny water droplets, clustering together to form clouds. These clouds can stretch across the sky, sometimes building up for hours before anything happens below.
Eventually, when the clouds become heavy with moisture, they release water back to the Earth’s surface—a stage known as precipitation. This can fall as rain, snow, sleet, or hail, depending on the temperature and weather conditions. It’s the moment when the sky opens up, watering plants, filling streams, and soaking the ground.
Finally, the water collects in various places through the collection phase. Rivers carry it back to oceans, lakes store it, and some of it seeps into the soil, recharging underground aquifers. Even puddles are part of this stage. From there, the cycle starts all over again, driven by the sun and the rhythms of nature.
