The 6 Pillars of Care: Building a Stronger Foundation in Support Work
When we talk about care, especially in professional or community settings, it’s not just about showing kindness—it’s about building a system rooted in respect, safety, and empathy. At the heart of this approach are the six pillars of care, which together form what’s known as the Duty to Care. These aren’t just buzzwords; they’re essential practices that guide how we support one another.
Diversity comes first—recognizing and valuing the differences in people’s backgrounds, cultures, and identities. It’s about seeing the individual, not making assumptions. Closely tied to this is Inclusion, ensuring everyone feels welcomed, heard, and able to participate fully, regardless of their circumstances.
Then there’s Physical Well-being—making sure people have access to nutrition, hygiene, medical care, and a safe environment. But true care doesn’t stop at the body. Mental Health and Well-being is just as critical. This means creating spaces where people feel emotionally supported, reducing stigma, and encouraging open conversations about mental health.
Safeguarding is another cornerstone. It’s about protecting individuals from harm, abuse, or neglect, especially those who may be vulnerable. This requires vigilance, clear procedures, and above all, trust.
Finally, Safe to Practice ensures that care workers themselves operate in environments where they’re protected, trained, and empowered. You can’t pour from an empty cup—supporting caregivers means better outcomes for everyone.
Together, these six pillars don’t just form a framework—they create a culture. One where care isn’t an afterthought, but the very foundation of every action taken.
