Natural polymers are all around us, quietly shaping everything from the food we eat to the medical treatments we receive. These large molecules, formed by nature, come in several key families—each with unique properties that make them invaluable.

Polysaccharides are among the most widespread natural polymers. Alginate, extracted from brown seaweed, is used in wound dressings and even in molecular gastronomy for its gelling properties. Hyaluronic acid, found in our skin and joints, is prized in cosmetics for its moisture-retaining ability. Starch, derived from plants like corn and potatoes, is not only a dietary staple but also used in biodegradable packaging and drug delivery systems.

Another major group is proteins, which serve both structural and functional roles. Collagen, the most abundant protein in mammals, gives strength to skin, bones, and tendons—and is widely used in tissue engineering and anti-aging products. Less known but equally fascinating are bacterial polyesters, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). These are produced by microbes as energy reserves and are fully biodegradable. With rising concerns about plastic pollution, PHAs are emerging as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics—breaking down safely in soil and water without leaving harmful residues.
