Downsides of Acrylic: What You Should Know
Acrylic, often known by brand names like Plexiglas, is prized for its clarity and lightweight nature. It’s a popular alternative to glass in everything from picture frames to storefront windows. But despite its many benefits, acrylic isn’t without its flaws—especially when exposed to harsh conditions.
Poor heat resistance is one of its major drawbacks.
Unlike traditional glass, which can withstand high temperatures, acrylic begins to soften at around 160°C (320°F). This means it’s not ideal for applications near heat sources or in environments with wide temperature fluctuations. In extreme cases, it may warp, crack, or even break under thermal stress. So while it’s great for indoor displays or mild outdoor use, placing it near a stove, fireplace, or in a closed car on a hot summer day can lead to damage.
Another issue is its susceptibility to UV degradation. While acrylic is more UV-resistant than many plastics, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can still cause colors to fade and the material to become brittle over time. This limits its longevity in outdoor applications unless it’s specially treated with a UV-protective coating. Even then, the protection may wear off after several years, requiring maintenance or replacement.
Additionally, acrylic scratches more easily than glass. While that doesn’t relate directly to heat or sunlight, it adds to the maintenance concerns—cleaning requires non-abrasive products to avoid clouding the surface.
In short, acrylic is strong and versatile, but not invincible. Understanding its weaknesses helps ensure it’s used where it performs best. For long-term durability in sunny or hot environments, additional precautions—or alternative materials—may be worth considering.
