In American football, the primary mission of a defensive back is to lock down the opposing team's passing game, and that battle starts the exact second the ball is snapped.

When a wide receiver fires off the line of scrimmage, defensive backs use physical play to disrupt their timing and throw off their route. However, this coverage comes with a strict boundary known as the five-yard rule.

A defender is only allowed to legally bump, jam, or redirect a receiver within the first 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. Once the receiver crosses that five-yard threshold, any significant contact or illegal holding will draw a flag from the officials, resulting in an automatic penalty and a fresh set of downs for the offense.
