The Fundamentals of Soccer
Soccer is wonderfully simple at its core, which is a huge part of why it captures the hearts of billions worldwide. Two teams, each featuring 11 players on the pitch, battle it out over two intense 45-minute halves to see who can put the ball in the back of the net the most times.
The primary mandate is straightforward: players must use their feet, torso, or head to control and advance the ball. Using your hands or arms is strictly off-limits, with the sole exception of the goalkeeper inside their designated penalty box, or when a player takes a throw-in from the sidelines.
As teams push forward on the attack, players also need to keep an eye on the onside rule, meaning an attacker cannot simply loiter near the opponent's goal waiting for a long pass without defenders between them and the keeper. Ultimately, a goal only counts when the entire ball crosses the opponent's goal line. It is a game built on fluid momentum, teamwork, and quick decision-making under pressure.
