The American Heart Association's Salty Six
When it comes to monitoring sodium intake, it is easy to think of obvious culprits like potato chips or salted nuts. However, a significant amount of the salt we consume hides in everyday meals. The American Heart Association highlights this issue through the Salty Six, shedding light on popular foods that quietly contribute high levels of sodium to our daily diets.
Topping the list are everyday staples like bread and rolls, which can pack a surprising amount of sodium when eaten consistently throughout the day. Processed options such as cold cuts and cured meats are also major contributors, alongside comfort foods like pizza and ready-to-eat soup.
Rounding out the list are poultry—often because of injections or brining solutions used during processing—and universally loved sandwiches, where the combination of bread, cheese, and cured meats multiplies the sodium content. Being aware of these hidden sources makes it much easier to make balanced, heart-healthy choices.
