The Three Main Disinfectants Used in Water Treatment

When it comes to cleaning and purifying water—especially in wastewater treatment plants—making sure harmful microorganisms are wiped out is a top priority. While water goes through several stages of filtration, the final disinfection step is crucial for safety. Generally, facility operators rely on three primary disinfectants to get the job done: chlorine, ozone, and ultraviolet (UV) light.

Each of these options brings something unique to the table. Chlorine has been a trusted workhorse for decades because it is effective and leaves a residual presence that keeps protecting water as it travels. Ozone is an incredibly powerful oxidant that knocks out contaminants quickly without leaving behind chemical tastes or harmful byproducts. Meanwhile, ultraviolet (UV) radiation uses light to neutralize bacteria and viruses instantly without adding any foreign substances to the water at all.

Rather than relying on just one method, modern water treatment facilities often mix and match these approaches. Combining them allows engineers to maximize their effectiveness, tackle tough pathogens, and ensure that the water returning to our environment or taps is as clean as possible.
