YouTube Shorts Rules for 2024: What Creators Need to Know

If you're creating Shorts on YouTube, the rules around monetization have shifted slightly in 2024—especially when it comes to video length and timing. While YouTube has long favored 60-second clips, a recent change now allows Shorts to be up to three minutes long. But not every long Short is eligible for monetization, and timing plays a key role.

For videos uploaded before October 15, 2024: If your Short runs longer than 60 seconds—say, a full three minutes—you’ll need an active first-party claim on the content to be eligible for monetization through the Shorts revenue-sharing model. This means YouTube must recognize the content as original and claimed directly by you, the creator, with no third-party claims or disputes. Without that, your longer Short won’t earn, even if it meets other criteria.

For three-minute Shorts uploaded after October 15, 2024: Good news—these are automatically eligible for monetization under the Shorts revenue model, provided they follow community guidelines and you're in the YouTube Partner Program. This change reflects YouTube’s push to give creators more flexibility while still protecting original content.

It’s also worth remembering that, regardless of length, your Short must be uploaded vertically, under three minutes, and tagged as a Short to qualify. Shorts monetization is separate from long-form video earnings, so even smaller channels can benefit if they meet the thresholds.

As always, staying on top of these updates helps ensure your creativity also pays off. If you're aiming for longer-form Shorts in 2024, make sure your content is original, properly claimed, and uploaded after the October 15 cutoff to maximize your earning potential.
