Though invisible to the untrained eye, biofilms are more common than most people realize. These slimy communities of microorganisms stick together on surfaces, creating protective layers that help them thrive. You’ve probably encountered them without even knowing.

One of the most familiar examples is the slick coating you feel on rocks at the bottom of rivers or in natural hot springs. That slippery layer isn’t just algae—microbes are forming a structured biofilm to survive the constant flow of water. These biofilms play a role in aquatic ecosystems, offering food and shelter for tiny organisms.

Another everyday example is the gunk that gradually clogs water pipes. Over time, bacteria latch onto the inner surfaces of pipes, multiply, and form dense colonies. As the biofilm grows, it traps minerals and debris, reducing water flow and sometimes causing unpleasant odors. This is especially common in older plumbing systems or poorly maintained water tanks.

You might also notice a filmy residue on shower tiles or the walls of swimming pools. That persistent slime isn’t just soap scum—it’s a biofilm thriving in warm, moist conditions. Regular cleaning helps, but because biofilms are resistant to many cleaning agents, they often come back quickly.

While some biofilms can be problematic—like those contributing to infections or contaminating equipment—others are beneficial in environmental clean-up or wastewater treatment. Their resilience and adaptability make them both a challenge and a wonder of nature.
