What Won’t Dissolve in Water?
When you stir sugar or salt into water, they seem to disappear—dissolving completely. But not everything behaves this way. Some substances simply refuse to mix, no matter how much you stir. These are called insoluble materials, meaning they don’t break down or blend into water.
Take sand, for example. Pour it into a glass of water, give it a good shake, and it might swirl around for a moment—but soon, it settles right back to the bottom. That’s because the tiny rock particles in sand don’t react with water molecules. They’re too stable, too chemically resistant to dissolve.
Fats, like butter or oil, play by different rules. You’ve probably noticed how oil forms slick droplets on water instead of mixing in. This happens because fats are nonpolar, while water is polar—a scientific way of saying they speak different chemical languages. Without a little help (like soap), they’ll always stay separate.
Then there’s wood. Whether it’s a log or a toothpick, wood holds its shape in water. While it might absorb moisture and swell over time, it doesn’t dissolve. Its structure is built on complex compounds like cellulose and lignin—tough polymers that water can’t break apart.
Other materials like most metals and plastics also resist dissolving. Think of a steel paperclip or a plastic bottle left in the rain—they may corrode or degrade eventually, but they won’t vanish into the water like salt does.
So while water is often called the "universal solvent" for its ability to dissolve many substances, plenty of everyday materials stand firm. Sand, fats, and wood are just a few reminders that some things simply don’t mix—no matter how long you wait.
