Can Vinegar Kill Every Germ?
While many people consider white vinegar a miracle cleaner, it has clear limits when it comes to sanitizing your home. If you are hoping it will wipe out every single pathogen on your kitchen counters or bathroom tiles, you might want to rethink your cleaning routine.
Research shows that vinegar is reasonably effective against common household bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. However, it falls short against tougher, more dangerous strains. Specifically, undiluted vinegar cannot reliably kill resilient bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus (Staph) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Furthermore, vinegar fails to qualify as an EPA-registered disinfectant because it does not kill viruses sufficiently. While it makes a great natural cleaner for cutting through grease and removing mineral deposits, you should not rely on it to disinfect surfaces contaminated with hazardous bacteria or viruses. For true disinfection in high-risk situations, reaching for a registered commercial disinfectant is always the safer choice.
