What Speeds Up Evaporation?

Ever notice how a puddle disappears faster on a hot, sunny day than on a cool, cloudy one? That’s evaporation in action—and several factors influence just how quickly it happens.

Temperature plays a major role. The warmer the liquid and its surroundings, the faster the molecules move. When water heats up, its molecules gain energy and escape into the air more easily as vapor. That’s why clothes dry quicker on a hot day or when hung near a heater.

Another key factor is the surface area of the liquid. Evaporation only happens at the surface, so the more exposed area there is, the more molecules can escape at once.
