How Brain Aneurysms Are Treated
A brain aneurysm occurs when a weak spot in an artery wall bulges outward like a tiny balloon. Because a rupture can lead to life-threatening complications, medical intervention aims to seal off the weakened area and restore safe blood circulation.
One of the most common modern treatments is endovascular coil embolization. In this minimally invasive procedure, a surgeon guides a thin catheter through the blood vessels to the site of the bulge. Tiny platinum coils are then released inside the aneurysm, causing blood to clot and effectively blocking further blood flow into the vessel's weak spot.
Another advanced technique is flow diversion. Doctors insert a small mesh stent inside the main blood vessel right past the aneurysm. This stent diverts the primary flow of blood away from the bulge, allowing the vessel wall to heal and shrink the aneurysm over time.
For more complex cases, traditional surgical intervention known as microsurgical clipping may be required. A neurosurgeon performs a craniotomy to access the brain directly and places a small metal clip across the neck of the aneurysm. This permanently isolates the bulge from normal circulation.
The ideal treatment depends on the aneurysm's size, shape, and location, as well as whether it has already ruptured. Prompt medical evaluation remains crucial for determining the safest pathway to recovery.
