Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Cancer Risk
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of organic chemicals generated during the incomplete combustion of organic materials, including fossil fuels, wood, and tobacco. While low-level environmental contact is common, prolonged or high-level occupational exposure to PAH mixtures presents severe long-term health risks.
Extensive epidemiological research involving industrial workers exposed to complex chemical mixtures indicates a heightened incidence of several malignancies. The primary organs affected include the skin, lungs, bladder, and the gastrointestinal tract. Toxicity typically occurs through multiple exposure pathways, notably inhalation of airborne particles, direct dermal contact, or ingestion of contaminated food and water.
Once absorbed into the body, metabolic processing converts certain PAHs into reactive intermediates. These compounds can bind directly to cellular DNA, causing mutations that disrupt normal cell growth regulation. Over time, persistent exposure significantly escalates carcinogenic risks, making strict safety protocols and monitoring essential in high-risk environments.
