9 cleaning habits you should quit today
When it comes to keeping your home spotless, not all habits are created equal. In fact, some of the things we do thinking we’re cleaning better might actually be doing more harm than good. Professionals agree: there are a few common practices you should ditch to keep your space truly clean—and safe.
First, using too many cleaning products doesn’t mean your home is cleaner. Overuse can leave behind sticky residues, irritate your lungs, and even damage surfaces. Similarly, using too much laundry detergent can leave clothes feeling stiff and actually reduce their lifespan—less is more here.
Another big mistake? Neglecting deep cleans. Surface wiping isn’t enough. Experts recommend regular deep cleaning of appliances, carpets, and vents to prevent hidden grime and allergens from building up. And if you’re not vacuuming regularly, especially in high-traffic areas, dust and allergens are just piling up in your carpets.
One habit that’s both dangerous and surprisingly common: mixing cleaning products. Combining bleach and ammonia, for example, can produce toxic fumes. Always read labels and avoid DIY chemical cocktails. Also, avoid spraying cleaners directly on surfaces, especially electronics or wood. Spray the cloth instead to prevent damage.
And here’s one most people overlook: not cleaning your cleaning tools. Mops, sponges, and cloths can harbor bacteria if not washed or replaced regularly. A dirty sponge spreads germs, it doesn’t eliminate them.
Finally, using the wrong cleaner for the surface, like vinegar on granite or abrasive scrubs on glass, can cause irreversible damage. Always match the product to the material.
Breaking these habits isn’t about perfection, it’s about smarter, safer cleaning. Small changes can make a big difference in both hygiene and home care.
