Diagnosing Pancreatitis

When doctors suspect pancreatitis, they rely on a combination of specific medical evaluations to confirm the condition and figure out what might be causing it. Because symptoms can sometimes overlap with other health issues, diagnostic testing is essential.

First, blood tests are typically ordered to check how well your immune system, pancreas, and surrounding organs are functioning. These tests look for elevated levels of certain pancreatic enzymes that spike when the organ is inflamed or under distress.

Imaging studies are equally crucial for a definitive diagnosis. An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to create pictures that can reveal gallstones blocking ducts or show direct signs of swelling and inflammation in the pancreas. In many cases, doctors will also order a CT scan, which provides much more detailed cross-sectional images to assess the exact extent of the inflammation and check for complications.

Ultimately, combining these laboratory results with advanced imaging allows healthcare professionals to accurately confirm pancreatitis, determine its severity, and plan the most effective treatment moving forward.
