Since late 2022, travel restrictions for Russian citizens have tightened significantly across several European and African nations. One of the most direct bans comes from Finland, which, citing security concerns, has refused entry to Russian tourists since September 30, 2022. This move was part of a broader response to the war in Ukraine, with Finland—now a NATO member—taking a firm stance on border control.

Further west, France continues to require a visa for Russian passport holders. While not a blanket ban, stringent application processes and increased scrutiny have made travel more difficult. Schengen-wide policies have also contributed to reduced approval rates for Russian nationals, limiting mobility across much of continental Europe.

Outside Europe, several African countries maintain visa requirements, though conditions vary widely. For instance, Gabon allows e-visas but mandates entry through Libreville International Airport, adding logistical hurdles. Meanwhile, The Gambia requires a visa upon arrival or in advance, with few exceptions.

It's important to note that while outright bans like Finland’s are rare, practical barriers—such as suspended flights, closed consulates, and complex visa procedures—effectively restrict travel for many Russians. Countries across the EU, the UK, Canada, and Australia have ramped up screening processes, often resulting in low approval rates.

For Russian travelers, the global landscape has shifted dramatically. What was once routine international movement now demands careful planning, patience, and often, a degree of luck. As geopolitical tensions persist, these restrictions show little sign of easing in the near future.
