Where Does Travelers' Diarrhea Happen Most?
Planning a trip can be thrilling, but dealing with stomach issues is a quick way to ruin an adventure. Travelers' diarrhea is the absolute most common illness people face when exploring the world. While it can technically happen anywhere if food or water is contaminated, certain regions carry a much higher risk than others.
If you are heading to Asia—with the notable exceptions of Japan and South Korea—you will want to take extra precautions. The risk level is similarly elevated across the Middle East and Africa. Closer to home for many, destinations throughout Mexico, as well as Central and South America, are also well-known hotspots for this condition.
The primary culprit behind these stomach troubles is usually consuming local water or food that harbors unfamiliar bacteria, parasites, or viruses. Even ice cubes or fresh salads washed in tap water can catch you off guard.
Fortunately, staying safe is mostly about smart habits rather than missing out on the local culture. Sticking to bottled or properly treated water, avoiding raw or undercooked street food, and making sure your meals are served piping hot can go a long way. Packing a few preventative essentials and staying mindful of what you eat ensures your next big trip is memorable for all the right reasons.
