What Deficiency Causes High Histamine Levels?
Many people experience unexplained symptoms like headaches, digestive issues, or skin flare-ups after eating certain foods—and for some, the root cause may lie in a deficiency most have never heard of: DAO, or diamine oxidase.
DAO is the primary enzyme responsible for breaking down histamine in the gut. When this enzyme isn't functioning properly—either due to low production or reduced activity—histamine can build up in the body, leading to what’s commonly known as histamine intolerance. While not a true allergy, this condition mimics allergic reactions and can significantly impact quality of life.
Several factors can impair DAO activity. Genetics may play a role, but so do lifestyle and diet. Alcohol, certain medications (like NSAIDs or antihistamines), and gastrointestinal conditions such as leaky gut or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can all interfere with DAO function. Additionally, nutrient deficiencies—especially in copper, vitamin B6, and magnesium, which are cofactors for DAO—can further reduce the enzyme’s efficiency.
Women are more commonly affected, possibly due to estrogen influencing histamine release and DAO inhibition. This may explain why symptoms often worsen during certain phases of the menstrual cycle or with hormonal contraceptives.
Managing histamine intolerance typically starts with a low-histamine diet—avoiding aged cheeses, fermented foods, alcohol, and processed meats. But addressing the root is key. Supporting DAO activity through dietary changes, stress reduction, and targeted supplementation can make a real difference.
While DAO deficiency isn’t widely recognized in conventional medicine, growing awareness is helping more people find relief by tackling the imbalance at its source—rather than just treating symptoms.
