Blood Type O and Autoimmune Conditions: What Science Suggests
While blood type might seem like a simple detail on a medical form, research shows it could play a subtle role in determining susceptibility to certain diseases. A recent study sheds light on how blood type O may be linked more frequently with specific autoimmune conditions, particularly among connective tissue disorders.
The findings indicate that individuals with blood type O appear at higher rates among patients diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), and Sjögren’s syndrome (SjS). These are chronic conditions where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, often affecting the skin, joints, and internal organs. While the exact reasons remain under investigation, scientists believe that genetic and immunological factors tied to blood group antigens may influence immune regulation and inflammatory responses.
Interestingly, the same study found that blood type A was more prevalent in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS)—conditions marked by erosive joint damage.
