How Surgeons Keep the Surgical Site Safe from Infection

Before any incision is made, one of the most critical steps in surgery happens quietly: disinfection. Surgeons don’t just rely on sterile tools—they also prepare the patient’s skin to drastically reduce the chance of surgical site infections (SSIs), which can complicate recovery and prolong hospital stays.

To do this, medical teams use powerful antiseptics as part of a preoperative skin preparation. These antiseptics are not household cleaners but medical-grade solutions designed to eliminate harmful microbes on the skin’s surface. The three most common types are iodine (or iodophor), alcohol, and chlorhexidine gluconate.

Iodine-based solutions, like povidone-iodine, have been trusted in operating rooms for decades. They work by slowly releasing iodine, which kills a broad spectrum of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. While effective, they can sometimes irritate sensitive skin or stain tissues.

Alcohol-based preparations, typically using isopropyl or ethyl alcohol, act quickly, killing germs on contact. However, they evaporate fast and don’t offer lasting protection unless combined with another agent.

Today, chlorhexidine gluconate is increasingly favored. It’s long-lasting, potent against a wide range of pathogens, and maintains its antimicrobial effect even after drying. When blended with alcohol, it offers both rapid action and sustained defense—making it a top choice for many surgical teams.

The choice of antiseptic often depends on the patient’s medical history, the type of surgery, and potential allergies. But no matter which one is used, the goal remains the same: to create a clean, safe starting point for surgery. It’s a small step with a big impact—proving that sometimes, the most powerful tools in the operating room aren’t scalpels, but solutions.
