What Does Appa Eat?

Appa, the loyal and lovable flying bison from Avatar: The Last Airbender, isn’t picky when it comes to meals. As a massive sky bison with an even bigger appetite, he thrives on a surprisingly varied herbivorous diet. While grass and hay make up his daily staples, Appa’s culinary adventures go far beyond the ordinary.

Throughout the Gaang’s journey across the Four Nations, Appa happily foraged wherever they landed. From the lush fields of the Earth Kingdom to the coastal cliffs of the Fire Nation, he found plenty to munch on. Seaweed and kelp became favorites during seaside stops—especially when fresh water was scarce. And yes, even fruit made it into his diet, likely thanks to Aang’s own plant-based preferences.

Then there’s the mystery of the buzzard wasp honey. While not a traditional food source, Appa was seen indulging in the sticky substance during the group’s visit to the Si Wong Desert. Whether it was curiosity or genuine taste, the honey didn’t seem to bother him—though it did lead to a rather chaotic encounter with the wasps themselves.

What’s impressive is how adaptable Appa is. Unlike most animals, he doesn’t just survive—he thrives—no matter the terrain. The Gaang rarely had to worry about feeding him because, quite simply, something was always edible to a bison with his appetite and flexibility.

In a world on the brink of war, Appa’s simple joy in a good meal—whether it’s a mouthful of grass or an experimental bite of honey—reminds us of the small, grounding pleasures that keep us going. After all, even a sky bison needs his snacks.
