How Asbestos Damages the Lungs
When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can become trapped in the lung tissue, leading to serious and often irreversible damage over time. The body can't break down these microscopic fibers, so they remain in the lungs, causing chronic inflammation and scarring—a condition known as asbestosis.
This scarring, or fibrosis, stiffens the lungs and reduces their ability to expand and contract properly. As a result, people with asbestosis often experience shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough, and fatigue. Symptoms typically develop years after exposure, sometimes decades, which makes early detection difficult.
There is no cure for asbestosis. Once the lung tissue is scarred, the damage cannot be undone. However, treatments such as oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, and symptom management can help improve quality of life. In severe cases, a lung transplant may be considered.
Workers in industries like construction, shipbuilding, insulation, and manufacturing have historically faced the highest risk of exposure, especially before safety regulations became stricter in the late 20th century. Even today, people renovating older homes or working in demolition may unknowingly come into contact with asbestos-containing materials.
Prevention remains the best defense. Proper safety gear, workplace regulations, and awareness are crucial in minimizing risk. If you've been exposed to asbestos over a long period, especially in a high-risk job, it's wise to discuss screening options with your doctor—even if you feel fine now. Early monitoring can make a significant difference in managing long-term health.
