What Factors Influence Evaporation?
Evaporation might seem like a simple process—water disappearing into the air—but it’s actually shaped by several key factors. At its core, evaporation is an endothermic process, meaning it absorbs heat. That’s why temperature plays a major role. The higher the temperature, the faster molecules move, increasing the likelihood they’ll escape from the liquid surface into the air. Warm summer days, for instance, make puddles vanish quicker than on cooler days.
Another important factor is surface area. A larger surface area exposes more liquid molecules to the air, speeding up evaporation. Think of spreading water thinly on a tray versus leaving it in a deep bucket—the shallow layer dries much faster.
Then there’s humidity. When the air is already packed with moisture—high humidity—evaporation slows down. In saturated conditions, there’s little room for additional water vapor, so the process becomes less efficient. That’s why damp clothes dry slowly on humid days compared to dry, breezy ones.
Together, temperature, surface area, and humidity form a delicate balance that controls how quickly evaporation occurs.
