Why the Sun Always Rises in the East

When someone says, “The sun always rises in the east,” they’re describing one of the most reliable patterns in nature—one that shapes our daily lives. But why is this the case? It all comes down to the way our planet moves.

Earth rotates on its axis, spinning from west to east. This rotation takes about 24 hours to complete—one full day. Because we’re standing on the surface, it feels like the sun is moving across the sky. But in reality, it’s the planet turning beneath us. As your location on Earth slowly rotates into the sunlight, the sun appears to rise above the horizon—always from the east.

This consistent easterly sunrise isn't just true for the Sun. The Moon, planets, and even distant stars follow the same path across the sky, rising in the east and setting in the west. It’s a direct result of Earth’s spin direction. If Earth rotated the opposite way, we’d see the sun rise in the west—but that’s not our reality.
