Staying Hydrated in the Mountains
Heading up into the high mountains is an incredible experience, but the rapid change in elevation can sometimes catch your body off guard. When you start feeling that familiar, dull headache or a wave of fatigue, it is usually a sign that your system is struggling to adjust to the thinner air. Fortunately, you do not just have to push through it.
The absolute best thing you can do for yourself in this moment is to drink a lot of hydrating liquids. Water is your best friend here, but sports drinks like Gatorade can also work wonders by helping to replenish the electrolytes you lose as you breathe faster in the dry, thin mountain air.
At the same time, you will want to completely avoid alcohol, which acts as a dehydrator and will only make your symptoms worse. Pair your hydration routine with a heavy dose of restβnow is not the time to push your limits. Take it easy, avoid heavy exertion, and give your body the time it needs to acclimatize naturally.
