Who’s Dining on Microbial Mats?

In the quiet corners of coastal pools and deep-sea vents, microbial mats—dense, slimy layers of bacteria and other microorganisms—form one of nature’s most ancient food webs. But who actually eats these living carpets?

Limpets, those unassuming bottom dwellers, are among the primary grazers. Using their rasping tongues, they scrape microbial mats up to three centimeters thick off rocks and sediments. These slow-moving mollusks play a surprisingly vital role in keeping microbial growth in check, much like sheep in an underwater pasture.

Elsewhere, mussels take a different approach. Instead of grazing directly, they filter the water, capturing free-floating bacteria that have broken free from the mat. This makes them key players in recycling microbial life back into the broader ecosystem.

Then there’s the Yeti crab—a creature straight out of legend, with hairy claws teeming with bacteria. But here’s the twist: it doesn’t eat the mat directly. Instead, it farms microbes on the bristles of its limbs, waving them in warm, mineral-rich currents. When the microbes multiply, the crab scrapes them off and eats them. It’s a bizarre but brilliant form of aquatic agriculture, turning its own body into a feeding ground.

From limpets to deep-sea crustaceans, the food chain built on microbial mats is as diverse as it is ancient. These tiny organisms may look unremarkable, but they’re the foundation for surprisingly complex relationships beneath the surface.
